BMS Newsletter - November

Dear Parents and Community Members,

The staff and students of Buhl Middle School would like to wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving. School will be out Nov. 21st, 22nd and 23rd. After we return from break, there will be four weeks left in first semester. This is a critical time for students to get their grades up and pass their classes to receive their credits. Please encourage your child to check their grades and work with teachers to get work completed and turned in.

We have a lot of activities planned for the last half of the quarter. On Nov. 27th we are having Cody Orchard, a Health Education Specialist with South Central Public Health District, come and talk to our students about the dangers of vaping. Cody coordinates the Tobacco Prevention and Education program for the state in the Magic Valley and has received a grant to go to schools and teach education classes on vaping. We would like to encourage parents to talk to their children about vaping. Schools across Idaho are seeing a huge increase in student vaping. If parents would like information about teens and vaping, visit https://e-cigarettes.surgeongeneral.gov/documents/SGR_ECig_ParentTipsheet_508.pdf

Builder’s Club will be starting our can food drive after Thanksgiving break. This is a great opportunity for our students to help support Buhl families during the holidays. As part of our new Gear Up grant, we have planned a college campus visit to the College of Western Idaho on Monday, December 3, for all of our 7th grade students and parents. Students and parents will get a tour of the campus and introduced to some of the programs that CWI offers. This will be the first of several campus visits to colleges around the area as part of Gear Up.

On Saturday, December 1st from 8 am to 4:30 pm, the middle school robotics club will host a qualifying tournament at the high school. They will be judged on 4 different criteria: robot design, core values, research project and robot games. Teams who score high enough will go on to compete at the state level. We still need volunteers for judging, so please call the school and let us know if you can help. Judges will be using a rubric to score each team.

We want to say congratulations to two of our staff members. Leigh Boyd had her baby boy, Dustin Taylor Boyd, on November 4th and Gage Olsen had his baby boy, Atticus Glen Olsen, on November 14th. We are very excited about the new additions to our BMS family!
